They say you can’t stand in the way of progress and you sure as hell can’t stand in the way of the machine that cut a swathe down the line recently.
The work on Standish Line is under way with a considerable amount of vegitation being cut back and made into chippings. The width of the path now is probably 10 times wider than I ever remember it.
I can’t help but wonder if this is so called multi user path will simply become a baron tarmac ribbon devoid of any vegitation at all. Although the path of the years has become muddy and at time impassible the wildlife such as birds and butterflies loved the vegetation, from Buddleias to Brambles for autumn feeding.
Here are some of the pictures from recent years
The planning drawing from Wigan Council does mention a 1.5m swale for wildlife friendly sustainable drainage, so maybe they have got an eye on this. They do say you can’t make an omelette without cracking eggs and as many will understand I’ve always wanted the line to be a path for everyone to enjoy the wildlife walking through Standish, but what with all the new build houses eating up fields and meadows, and now many many trees and hedgerows gone along The Line I do worry if Standish is going to become a wildlife free zone.
Fingers crossed it won’t…a bit of mud and wildlife never hurt anyone. Anyone for seed bombing?
