My self appointed mission was to clear and tidy ‘The Line at Standish’ … slowly but surely, I did a bit and then a little more. Eventually I won an award from Standish Community Forum for services to the environment. I painted my vision to have a footpath accessible by everyone, with lighting, beneficial to wildlife, wild flowers and a safe path for everyone to make use of throughout the year.
Well this week (22/02/16) I read the news that Wigan Council have at last taken this job on. The communication states …
As you may be aware, Wigan Council is upgrading the old mineral lint (“The Line”) to a 3m wide multi-user route with work to begin this year. The route will be lit for safe year round use and will provide alternative and sustainable access from the west of Standish in to the centre…..
….. I am writing to inform you that vegetation clearance in the areas highlighted on the plan will begin today. It is essential that the work is carried out at this time, before the nesting season begins, to minimise the impact on local wildlife.
A planning application for the upgrade will be submitted in due course and you will have the opportunity to comment on the proposals at that stage.
So with a bit of luck Wigan Council will have this sorted soon. But in the mean time I watch with interest to see how many trees will be cut down, trees that I and community members have planted.
All the same it is quite sad in some ways that so many acres of fields were lost to build houses and in return the community gets only a proposal of a footpath refurbishment.
I wait with baited breath. All the same enjoy the increased traffic congestion as the village grows slowly into a small town.
