Standish Guerilla Gardeners

a project to get an old railway track in Standish restored so we can use it to walk to the village

Great News!!!

At last we have some movement, with the help of a local resident Tracey Howson badgering the council to pull there finger out the project is stating to move again.

We have just received delivery of ten ash and birch trees all about ten foot tall.  These have been kindly dontated by the guys at Giants Hall Farm Wigan.  Hopefully we will have some more help from these great guys with the provision of some road scrapings to make up the path, there was even the suggestion that they may bring some equipment to help ferry the material up and down the line.

The trees that have been dropped off where in a bit of state because they have been more or less ripped out of the ground but they have been bagged up and watered ready for planting hopefully next weekend.

All we need now is a large bag of wildflower seed and we should have an amazing new path for the spring and summer – come on Neil I’m sure you can rustle these up from somewhere.

So to the plan

  1. Litter pick the area
  2. Brush cut  as much of the bramble as possible and trim the area already seeded of grasses
  3. Plant and stake trees
  4. Lay new path with road scrapings
  5. Scatter sow seeds

Points 1-4 needs to be done before the end of February then the seed sowing can be done in March.

So a new year and a new fresher outlook – just as the project was beginning to look a bit sad, there’s a bright new start for 2008.

With a bit of luck and few extra pairs of hands we could easily have this done for Easter.  Then what a spring and summer we have to look forward to.

Thanks to everyone who’s helped  so far and if you would like to volunteer for a dig or some light litter picking let me know – or simply pick up a few rubbish bags and pick away (but be careful and wear gloves)

New Year

Rain, Mud, Rain, Mud oh yeh and litter.  That’s all that’s happened on this project since September.

Except I hopefully have a new recruit and it seems like the trees may actual turn up.

Sadly over time your determination to get a job done wains a little so you need to step back and have a breather but when someone comes along who is willing to help well it really kicks you back into action.

And a local resident is sending great emails to the local councilor to get the cinder we need to repair the path – which is great news because little water logging means we can get on with simple stuff like litter picks, stuff that makes a difference.  The mud donw the line has become so deep you’d be hard pushed to get down on a bike never mind walk.  Even the new verge I cut has been eroded so much that I’d need to cut a new one but that would go the same way.

If I can get that cinder and another wheel barrow I can start filling in the big holes and get the place tidier ready for spring.

Hey maybe some light at the end of the tunnel after all
