Standish Guerilla Gardeners

a project to get an old railway track restored so we can use it to walk to the village

Growth!

Phewy – it’s been over a month since I did an update OMG!!!
Anyway, in a month or so lots have happened and lots of really great news and of course as it’s spring – GROWTH!
So firstly the news and great news it is.
I’m a designer, and a few months ago I was approached to help with a logo for a local primary school, they had run a competition and a little boy was made the winner. I was asked if I could re-create it so that it retained the style but was workable for all manner of uses. Anyway I did the work and passed the logo back to the school, they asked me for an invoice and I decided not to charge them because – hey what goes around comes around. Anyway they insisted so I explained about this project and said they could donate a couple of packs of seeds. A month or so later I was asked to attend an assembly where I was presented with approx 70 packs of seeds!!! And best of all the seeds had been donated by the parents of the children – amazing.
I’ve been asked if the children can come over and help for a few hours in the future – which is soooo cool.

The next bit of news – big one this. The local community forum asked me to attend one of their meetings, to explain what I was up to. I attended and explained, to my amazement they gave me their full backing and offered some financial support, they are going to contact the council to get the brambles cut back, provide wild flower seeds and ask if local scouts and guides etc can help do a litter pick. WOW!!! I was knocked out, from doing something just because you can to becoming a respected member of the community for just being a guerrilla gardener!!!
Phew so yeh it’s been more than giddy and two very, very amazing experiences.
Put it this way if the community forum don’t come good – it’s fired me up enough to keep going.
So back top the project where we up to. Well I’ve take a bucket of load of pics that kinda show things coming along. I’ve got willow rooting in a bucket to plant in place of the brambles, poppy and wildflower seedlings coming through, ornamental poppy heads showing and well loads of other stuff that must have been dormant.
Take a look and get back to me if you spot anything.

P.S Oh yeh forgot to say, the very first plant I put in was a eucalyptus tree that had blown down in the wind, now this tree was well established and the root ball massive. However it needed moving, so I used the chain saw to take the top of and tried ever so hard to keep some root on it, but sadly I had to cut though the main taproots. I walked it across the road as it was too big to carry alone, I dug a hole, hoped for the best and prayed the tree fairies would look favourably on me for at least trying to save it.
A week later some stupid brainless lads then kicked it over and I had to replant it again!!! Not much hope for this tree I thought, anyway I left it alone and as with all natural things left Mother Nature to make up her mind – anyway last week shoots!!!! I couldn’t believe it how hard is a tree, to say I was chuffed was an understatement the bloody thing is growing, so hopefully there’s no stopping it now.
